International Baccalaureate Diploma Program
In the last two grades of secondary education (10th and 11th grade), students follow the International Baccalaureate Diploma program. The diploma program is a culmination of the educational process at school and as an added value allows students to open their horizons to the best national and international universities.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program (DP) is an educational program with its own evaluation system, designed for students aged 16 - 19. The program aims to train students to achieve an excellent depth in their knowledge, while growing physically, intellectually, emotionally, and ethically. It provides tools for our students to be able to face an increasingly globalized world, with the capacity to face new challenges, just as the DP prepares students to successfully experience higher education and beyond.
Apart from academic excellence, the DP fosters inquiry, solidarity, intercultural understanding, and open mindedness, as well as the attitudes necessary to respect and evaluate different points of view.
The students of the DP study a variety of subjects in order to receive a comprehensive education that encourages them to observe the connections that exist among the different academic fields. All disciplinary areas of the DP, whether they are studied at the Higher Level (HL) or the Standard Level (SL); are essential to the program, receiving the same importance and designed to cover two years of the program. In most cases, HL and SL courses share the same educational objectives and core curriculum components. Normally HL courses also include a series of optional elements, designed for students to explore in depth certain areas of interest. The assessment objectives are the same for SL and HL and, like all IB exams, are corrected and standardized with the same strictness. SL courses generally cover 150 teaching hours, while HL courses cover 240 hours.
Students from Gimnasio El Hontanar will take the IB exams in Novemberin subjects such as language, literature (Spanish and English), history, business management, geography, biology, mathematics, and visual arts.
On the other hand, the program has a common objective consisting of three components, which are mandatory requirements; The first is Theory of Knowledge, which establishes connections between traditional academic disciplines and explores the nature of knowledge. The second is the Extended Essay, which requires research on an area of the student’s interest. The third is Creativity, Activity and Service, which fosters personal and interpersonal development by executing concrete projects outside the classroom, which should generate meaningful learning, in our case, social, academic and sports activities (CAS).
In order to carry out this work, the school has excellent physical and human resources, as well as a teaching group trained not only in their particular discipline, but also in the management of the programs for their corresponding evaluation.
